December The program allowed members to share "best practices" with one another.
November Dana Chapman, Eastern Director of the Iowa State SHRM Council presented "Executive Benefits – What's Hot?" Looking at recent survey information, Executive Insurance programs, Retirement Plans, and Employment Guarantees were high on the list. Also, Travel Perqs like cellular or car telephones, vacation schedules, club memberships, and personal financial counseling/tax preparation were popular perqs.
October Mike Stabell of the Department of Labor, stated that the Department's goal is to assist employers in understanding labor law so that they can achieve compliance. He provided important detailed information to members on upcoming changes, including revisons to the FMLA, and new regulations regarding child labor.
September Fifth Annual Employment Law Seminar is held at Hawkeye Community College. No regularly scheduled meeting.
August Walter Reed of the City of Waterloo Commission on Human Rights presented an informative program on the agency's mission, authority, responsibilities and ongoing educational outreach programs.
July Mark Higley of VGM out several HIPAA handouts and pointed out some situations regarding be HIPAA Compliant from an Employer's Perspective.
June (two speakers) Karen Ackerman of the University of Iowa introduced members to Iowa's youth transition project, Smart Start: Enhancing Access, Equity and Opportunity for Youth with Disabilities, which is currently underway in the Waterloo community school District.
John Winter from John Deere discussed "School to Career Programs" that prepare local high school students for future employment in area metalworking companies.
May Attorney Arren Hawbaker stated that FMLA/ADA are broad subjects and very complex. Mr. Hawkbaker encouraged use of a couple web sites... Department of Labor-FMLA and Department of Justice-ADA. He discussed some relevant legal cases and invited CVSHRM members to ask questions.
April Jason Weinburger, Conductor of the Waterloo Cedar Falls Symphony, discussed the organizational structure of the orchestra and shared his personal approach to leadership within the organization.
March Speaker Steve Sesterhenn, HR Manager at GMAC Mortgage, discussed HR Consulting Skills and specifically the company's "Project Diamond."
February HR & Order - HR issues were passed out to those seated at each table to discuss and answer as to how they would handle various situations. An answer sheet was in an envelope that was read after each table discussed their answer to see if they answered correctly.
January Current Iowa SHRM State Council Director and former CVSHRM member, Eric Branson, discussed the role the council plays in connecting local chapters to the larger world of SHRM.
